Tonight Ultra-red welcome attendees to the XVI International AIDS Conference and local AIDS activists to reflect for the record on the state of the AIDS crisis globally.

The performance is facilitated by seven individuals who participated in each of the previous performances of Ultra-red's SILENT | LISTEN. At a point in the performance, each facilitator will open the record and invite the audience to approach the tables to enter a statement into the record. All are welcome to contribute to the record of the AIDS crisis.

SILENT|LISTEN International Performance
Script

NOTE: The facilitators at each table follow the same script (with versions available in English, Spanish and French). The facilitators should attempt to remain synchronized with each other up until the point where statements are entered into the record.

[A representative from the Art Gallery of Ontario introduces the evening following which Dont says a few words about the performance]

[Facilitators and musicians move to the head of their respective tables]

Once everyone is at their tables and following a second of stillness, the facilitators announce in unison:

FACILITATOR - Four minutes and thirty-three seconds, composed by John Cage in 1952.

[Facilitators and musicians take their seats and the facilitators time a period of 4 minutes and thirty-three seconds]

At the end of the period, each facilitator announces:

- Time.

Facilitators, with microphones in hand, approach the audience and ask a different person in turn the following questions:

- Good evening, what did you hear?

[Wait for person to respond]

- Good evening, what did you hear?

[Wait for person to respond]

- When was the last time you were in this space or one like it?

[Wait for person to respond]

- What is the relationship between this space and the city of Toronto?

[Wait for person to respond]

- When was the last time you talked about AIDS in this space or one like it?

[Wait for person to respond]

- When was the last time you talked about AIDS in this space or one like it?

[Wait for person to respond]

- When was the last time you talked about AIDS in this space or one like it?

[Wait for person to respond]

[Facilitators return to their seats]

When all of the facilitators are back in their seats, each facilitator announces:

- We will now review the minutes from statements entered into the record at the Art Gallery of Ontario in Toronto on Wednesday, August 9, 2006.

[The minutes are performed at each table]

Once the review of the minutes for the table have ended, the facilitator for each table announces:

- Good evening. My name is [facilitatorŐs name]. I entered a statement into the record at the [facilitator states the location of the first performance they attended] on [state date of first performance].

- It is Monday, August 14, 2006, the record for the Art Gallery of Ontario in acknowledgment of the XVI International AIDS Conference is now open. Will the first speaker please approach the table and enter her/his statement into the record.

[First speaker approaches the table]

The first speaker begins by stating:

FIRST PARTICIPANT - It is [exact time]. My name is [name]. I work with [name of organization].

[First speaker enters his/her statement in the record]

Once it is clear the speaker has concluded the statement, the facilitator says:

- Thank you. We will now review the statement.

Once the performance of the statement review is compete, the facilitator announces:

- Will the second speaker please approach the table and enter her/his statement into the record.

The second speaker begins by stating:

SECOND PARTICIPANT - It is [exact time]. My name is [name]. I work with [name of organization].

[second speaker enters his/her statement in the record]

REPEAT THE SAME PR0CESS for the next two speakers.

Once the fourth statement is concluded, the facilitator announces:

- The record is now open for additional comments. There are [number] open seats at the table. If anyone else in the room would like to make a statement for the record, please have a seat at the table.

[The first person comes to the table]

The facilitator announces:

- It is now [facilitator gives the time]. Please state your name for the record.

[Wait for speaker to say his/her Name]

- Would you like to acknowledge an organizational affiliation?

[Wait for speaker to respond]

- You may enter your statement into the record.

[Wait for speaker to make his/her statement]

Once the speaker has concluded his/her statement, the facilitator announces:

- Thank you [pause]. The record remains open for additional comments. There are now [facilitator notes the number of empty seats at the table] additional seats at the table. If anyone else wishes to enter a statement into the record this evening, please approach the table.

[Repeat until all seats are filled.]

[Once the seats are filled or whenever no one approaches the table, the facilitator begins timing the silence at the table. The silence may be broken by someone arriving at the table or by someone already at the table making an additional comment. The facilitator always begins timing the silence as soon as these comment come to an end]

Once the silence has continued unbroken for 4 minutes and 33 seconds, the facilitator announces: - Time. The record for the XVI International AIDS Conference is now closed. Thank you for your participation. Good evening.

[The facilitator, musician and participants leave the table]

The entire performance is concluded when the last facilitator calls time.
